Bears Baseball Gets Involved in the Community
MACON, Ga. – Now that the fall season is over, the Mercer baseball team has stepped up its efforts off the diamond with its work in the community.
The Bears have made several trips over the past few weeks to the Elam Baptist Church in Gray, Ga. to work with the Jones County Special Olympics Program.
Once at the church, all the players and kids went to the church gymnasium to organize some basketball drills and games. The players taught the kids how to stretch, talked to them about the importance of exercising and then played some basketball pick-up games with the kids.
"I think it is important for us to be visible in our community and give back to those who are less fortunate," head coach Craig Gibson said.
The baseball team has placed a great focus on community service activity and this is one of the many volunteer activities that the team has participated in this year. Starting with its work with the Miracle League of Macon last summer, the team has amassed just over 200 total hours of volunteer service in the Macon community so far this year alone.
"I am very pleased with the commitment of our student athletes to the community," said Gibson. "The young men in our program here have a gift and I think they realize that and are happy to give back and be role models for these amazing kids."
