Baseball to Receive A-Sun Championship Rings on Friday
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team will receive its 2010 Atlantic Sun Championship rings in a ceremony at halftime of the Mercer men's basketball game against Navy on Friday, Nov. 18. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off at the University Center.
The ring, made by Balfour, is custom designed and features an orange sapphire and 50 cubic zirconia stones. Surrounding the stones on the top of the ring are the words "2010 A-Sun Champions". One of the side panels features the trademark Mercer Spires with each player’s name and number on it. The other side panel says “Mercer Bears” on it along with the NCAA logo and the teams’ 38-24 record. Each ring is also engraved on the inside with the player’s name.
A season ago, the Mercer baseball team defied all odds by winning four-straight games in the double-elimination conference tournament to capture the A-Sun Championship for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 1983. The team would then go on to participate in the NCAA Atlanta Regional.
“I am looking forward to Friday night because I know how excited our guys are going to be to finally see what all their dedication and hard work was for last year,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “Last season was a magical ride, but at the same time once we get those rings we have to turn the page and start focusing on our upcoming 2011 season.”
The Bears open up their 2011 season when they host Big South member Liberty for a four-game series from Feb. 18-20.
