Burns Captures Final A-Sun Player of the Week Award

MACON, Ga. – Mercer junior Billy Burns was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week for his performance during the week of May 16-22, as announced by the conference office on Monday morning.

 

The A-Sun award is the first of Burns’ career and the fourth garnered by a Mercer player this season.

 

Burns batted .667 with a .750 on-base percentage for the Bears while collecting at least two hits in all four games last week. The Marietta, Ga. native scored eight times and stole a base last week, raising his A-Sun leading totals in both categories to 68 runs scored and 29 stolen bases, respectively.

 

Burns went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored to help Mercer down Georgia State, 9-6, and give the Bears at least one win against every Division I college baseball program in the state of Georgia.

   

For the season, Burns in batting .356 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 31 RBI from his lead-off spot in the Bears line-up.

 

Mercer now looks forward to the A-Sun Championship this week on the campus of Lipscomb University. The Bears open the tournament as the No. 4 seed and take on No. 3 seeded Kennesaw State on May 25, at 8 p.m. ET in the opening round of play.
