Love Named Pitcher of the Year for Brewster Whitecaps
MACON, Ga. – Mercer senior starting pitcher Brandon Love was
named Pitcher of the Year for the Brewster Whitecaps on Monday
morning for his stellar level of play throughout the summer ball
season.
Love is still pitching for the Whitecaps as they battle the Harwich Mariners in the first round of the 2011 Cape Cod League Playoffs.
“We are very proud of Brandon for being named Pitcher of the Year for the Brewster Whitecaps,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “He followed up a great spring, in which he was named All-Conference first team, with an even better summer campaign. We need Brandon to continue his growth and lead our pitching staff looking ahead to the 2012 season.”
The Augusta, Ga. native has made the most of his opportunity during his time in the Cape this summer, which is widely considered the best summer league in the country.
As of August 7, Love has appeared in 10 games for Brewster, including five starts. He has an impressive 4-1 overall record to go along with a 2.20 ERA, second amongst all Whitecaps starting pitchers. The left-hander has thrown at total of 32.2 innings this summer and carries a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 29-to-13.
Love’s level of play has continued to rise after putting up a stellar 2011 season for Mercer. Pitching as the Bears number one starter all season long, Love finished tied for second in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 3.26 ERA and sixth in the league with a .260 opposing batting average. He finished the season with an 8-1 overall record and ranked tied for first on the team with 80.0 innings pitched on his way to being named an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection.
Love and the rest of the Bears begin returning back to campus later next week and begin Fall Ball practice starting on Sept. 26.
