Bears Prepare to Host Alabama State in Weekend Series

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team continues its busy start to the 2011 season by welcoming Alabama State to Claude Smith Field for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.

 

Game two is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. with the series finale set for Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.

 

This series will conclude a hectic start to the season for the Bears, who have already played seven games over the first six days of their 2011 campaign. 

 

Last Time Out

 

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Mercer baseball team used a combination of potent offense and shut down pitching to come away with a doubleheader sweep of Florida A&M on Wednesday evening at Moore-Kittles Field.

 

Game one featured an offensive explosion for Mercer, who scored 18 runs over the first five innings of play. Senior Joe Winker led the charge, going three-for-three with a home run, four runs scored and four RBI.

 

Game two featured a dominant pitching performance by senior Russell Moses who finished with a complete game after allowing just one run on four hits while striking out a career-high 13 batters.

 

Scouting the Opposition

 

Alabama State enters this weekend 3-1 after most recently dropping an 11-7 decision to Alabama on February 22. The Hornets return 25 of 26 letterwinners and all nine position players from last year's squad that finished 13-28 overall. Senior catcher Jourdan Mott paces the Alabama State offense with a .545 batting average, seven RBI and five runs scored.

- The Mercer offense is off to another quick start this season, pacing the Atlantic Sun Conference in a multitude of statistical categories. The Bears lead the A-Sun in slugging percentage (.595), runs scored (63), hits (77), RBI (57), doubles (19), home runs (15) and total bases (141).
