Bears Participate in Inaugural Mercer Buddies Event
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team took part in its first-ever Baseball Buddies Event on May 15 at Peyton Anderson Miracle Field in the West Macon Park.
The Bears spent the day playing three games of baseball with special needs children of all ages.
“We always feel very fortunate when we have an opportunity to give back and interact within the community and this event was a great way to do that,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “It worked out great for us because we had the weekend off and our guys always feel good when they get to go out and work with the kids.”
The all day event started at 10 am and featured Mercer baseball players playing in three games with six different special needs teams. Each Mercer baseball player was paired with a special needs child on each team and helped him or her bat and play in the field.
Miracle League of Macon (MLM) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2003. The Miracle League provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league.
The Bears wind down their regular season with a three-game homestand against Belmont starting on May 20. Mercer needs to win just one game in the series to clinch its fifth-straight Atlantic Sun Championship appearance.
