Mercer Looks to Make it Five in a Row at The Citadel

MACON, Ga. – Winners of four in a row and eight of its last nine, the Mercer baseball team aims to keep things rolling against The Citadel on Tuesday night. The Bears enter play with a 28-20 overall record, while the Bulldogs check in at 30-19 overall. Game time is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Last Time Out

Mercer swept a three-game set from Kennesaw State on April 30-May 1 to capture its third-straight Atlantic Sun series victory. The Bears won game one 5-2 on Friday night thanks to a stellar outing by freshman starting pitcher Matt McCall. The Valdosta, Ga. native went 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out four to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Games two and three of the series saw the Bears' offense take over and carry the team to 11-4 and 15-8 victories. Junior Thomas Carroll and freshman Evan Boyd led the way five hits apiece on the day while seniors Tyler McCarty, Nick DiMauro and Carroll each drove in four runs apiece.

Scouting the Opposition

The Citadel (30-19, 18-6 SoCon) enters Tuesday night’s contest after dropping two-out-of-three to cross-town rival College of Charleston this past weekend.

The Bulldogs rely heavily on their pitching staff that ranks second in the SoCon conference with a 5.09 team ERA and 393 strikeouts.

Senior Bryan Altman paces The Citadel offense with a team-high .341 batting average, 11 home runs and 51 RBI.

Game Notes

- The Citadel holds a 10-4 lead in the all-time series between the two clubs. Mercer has split its two games with the Bulldogs over the past two seasons, however, after a 17-year break in the series.

- Sophomore Billy Burns is currently on a 17-game hitting streak. His current streak is tied with fellow classmate Jacob Tanis for the longest streak on the team this season.

- Mercer is currently on a six-game road winning streak, the third-best active streak in the country.
