Burns Captures NCAA Regional All-Tournament Honors
MACON, Ga. – Sophomore Billy Burns had an outstanding week of play for the Mercer baseball team in the NCAA Atlanta Regional this past week and was rewarded by being named to the Atlanta Regional all-tournament team.
The Atlanta Regional All-Tournament team included DH Ross Wilson, shortstop Josh Rutledge, third baseman Jake Smith and outfielder Taylor Dugas of the Crimson Tide; first baseman Tony Plagman, second baseman Jacob Esch, outfielder Chase Burnette and pitcher Deck McGuire of Georgia Tech, catcher Alex Swim of Elon and outfielder Billy Burns of Mercer.
It was the third major award Burns has collected this season after being named to the 2010 CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District III second team and the A-Sun All-Tournament Team.
“Billy really came on strong during the final third of our season and carried his strong play into regional action,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “He is such a catalyst for our offense and he was very much deserving of the award.”
Burns had a stellar regional for the Bears batting .500 (6-for-12) with a triple, four runs scored and a stolen base. That stolen base for Burns was his 30th of the year, tying the record for the most stolen bases in a single-season in Mercer history.
That is not the only record the Marietta, Ga. native set during his banner season. Burns scored a Mercer single-season record 73 runs this year in just 52 games played.
For the season, Burns batted .381 with four triples, two home runs, 25 RBI and a .477 on-base percentage.
