Mercer drops midweek to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern scored 19 runs in its final three trips to the plate rolling to a 21-7 victory over Mercer Tuesday evening at J.I. Clements Stadium.

The Bears (38-14) trailed 2-1 before scoring four times in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.

Bill Knight picked up two RBIs on a double to right field and Collin Price belted a two-run homer later in the inning.

The Eagles (35-17) sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth that changed the momentum of the midweek tilt.

Georgia Southern plated nine runs on eight hits, including a trio of doubles, to reclaim the advantage.

The Eagles added on a run in the seventh and erupted for nine more in the eighth.

Ryan Archibald came off the bench in the ninth to record a two-run double to cap the scoring.

Mercer was limited to seven hits in its final midweek contest of the season.

Angelo DiSpigna led the way with two singles. Knight was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Price hit his team-leading 18^th homer of the season and drove in two. Trevor Austin also had an RBI on his second-inning single.

Wesley Franklin (3-2) was handed the loss after allowing three runs in the sixth inning.

Danny Madden (2-1) received the win while hurling two scoreless frames.

The Bears will travel to Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday to open a pivotal three-game Southern Conference set against Samford. First pitch of the series opener is slated for 5 p.m. (ET) at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
