Bears plate six runs in late frames to beat Georgia State

DECATUR, Ga. – Bill Knight's go-ahead solo homer in the eighth inning led Mercer to an 11-5 victory over Georgia State Tuesday night at GSU Baseball Complex.

The Bears (36-12) snapped a three-game skid with the victory. The win also marked a season sweep of the Panthers (27-23).

Georgia State jumped out to a 4-0 lead following a four-run second inning.

Mercer began to chip away in the following frame with Knight scoring on Collin Price's triple.

The Bears trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the fourth, as Angelo DiSpigna drove in both Will Mapes and David Burke with a triple of his own.

Two innings later, Treyson Hughes belted a two-run homer that gave Mercer its first lead of the night.

However, the Panthers worked their way back even as Cam Jones drove in a run on a single in the seventh.

Knight led of the eighth and worked the count to 3-1 before launching his 11^th home run of the season that put the Bears (36-12) in front for good.

Luke Sutko retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to hold the advantage.

Mercer plated five insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Knight recorded an RBI single to start the big stanza. Hughes hammered his second homer of the night, a three-run shot, and Jozsef Rohrbacher also hit a solo home run to cap the scoring.

Sutko (3-2) held Georgia State scoreless in 2.2 innings to earn the win out of the bullpen.

Rafael Acosta (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs in 1.1 innings.

Knight was 3 for 5 at the plate with a homer and two RBIs. He also scored four times. Hughes drove in five runs on his 11^th and 12^th home runs of the season.

The Bears will return home Friday to host VMI in a Southern Conference series opener. Game one of the three-game set will begin at 6 p.m. at OrthoGeorgia Park.
