Georgia Southern uses four-run innings to beat Bears

MACON, Ga. – Georgia Southern used a pair of four-run innings to defeat Mercer, 8-3, Wednesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park. It marked just the second loss for the Bears this season.

Mercer (15-2) jumped on the board first, as Colby Thomas scored on an error. The Eagles (11-6) hit a pair of home runs in the fourth inning. Noah Ledford had a three-run homer before Austin Thompson added a solo shot to give Georgia Southern a 4-1 lead.

Treyson Hughes hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 4-2.

An inning later, Bill Knight scored on a Trevor Austin fielder's choice, trimming the deficit to only one run.

However, the Eagles scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning that pushed the advantage to 8-3.

The Bears tallied seven hits on the night, but only one for extra bases.

Hughes and Antonio Brown each logged a pair of hits. Hughes' fourth-inning home run was his fourth of the season.

Jay Thompson (1-0) received the win after striking out three in two innings of work.

Ryan Lobus (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in five stanzas. He also struck out six and walked two.

Mercer will return to action Friday in the opener of a three-game series at USF.
