Mercer takes first series of 2022 season
MACON, Ga. – The Bears struck early again on Saturday, when Colby Thomas raced home on a 6-4-3 double play to take the 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning on the way to a 13-2 triumph. Two innings later, more offense came for Mercer when William Mapes and Thomas registered consecutive singles and were promptly brought home when Bill Knight sent a towering shot just to the right of the batter's eye for the 4-0 lead.
Â
Fred Wilson (1-0) was credited with the win after a performance in which he fanned 11, walked just three and yielded just a pair of runs with 20 faced. EKU's Rese Brown (0-1) was charged with the loss after surrendering four runs (all earned) on four hits.
Â
Trouble ensued a half-inning later as EKU halved the lead on a double to the warning track that sent Kendal Elwell and Sebastian Greco across the plate.
Coach Gibson's Reaction
In the Bears' half of the fifth, Thomas and Jozsef Rohrbacher reached bases on consecutive trips and then promptly moved into scoring position via a picture-perfect sacrifice bunt down the first base line. Le Bassett brought Thomas home on the ensuing at-bat to up the lead to 3. Collin Price followed with a single to shallow left to bring the lead back to 4 at 6-2.
Â
The Bears would plate three more to up the lead to 9-2.
Â
Mercer would tack on one more in the eighth when Ryan Archibald doubled down the right field line and brought Treyson Hughes home for its 10th run of the affair. Trevor Rider was responsible for the last three runs - which came on his longshot to deep left center.
Â
Pitching in relief – Jackson Kelley, Colton Cosper and Holton McGaha – threw 1.0 innings apiece following Wilson's 5.0.
Â
Tomorrow, the Bears will go for the sweep of the Colonels, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. from OrthoGeorgia Park.
