Mercer Sets Another Record with 1-1 Day in Florida

Bears defeated FGCU, 3-2, for second straight day
DELAND, Fla. – Mercer defeated FGCU, 3-2, for the second straight day to set yet another program record with its fifth ASUN Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Courts.
The Bears were also defeated by No. 9 (AVCA) Stetson, 4-1, for their second loss in as many days to the Hatters, but finished the weekend with a 12-9 (5-1 ASUN) record. The five ASUN wins are the most in a single-season for Mercer.
Straight-set wins by Tori Penrod/Emily Krogman (No. 1), Emma Peel/Sophie Peel (No. 2) and Gretja Otten/Jessica Johnson (No. 5) powered the Bears to the 3-2 win over the Eagles. Penrod and Krogman clinched the overall win with their victory in the final set of the match.
Otten and Johnson are now 4-1 as a pair in ASUN play while the Peel sisters and Penrod/Krogman improved to 4-3 in conference action. Both Danielle Faust/Claire Waliczek and Demi-Shay Watchorn/Madison Kerr went three sets against FGCU, but could not pull out wins.
Faust and Waliczek swept Stetson's No. 3 pairing, 22-20 and 23-21, for Mercer's lone win over the Hatters earlier in the day. The win was Faust and Waliczek's 13th of the year. They are 5-2 in ASUN play.
