BOCA RATON, Fla. – Mercer improved to 2-0 on the season with a 66-55 victory over Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. on Sunday afternoon. Amanda Thompson finished with a double-double (10 points and 10 boards). Â
Â
STAT OF THE MATCH
Mercer's defense proved to be stingy yet again, forcing 24 turnovers against the Florida Atlantic offense. The Bears have now forced 51 turnovers in the first two games.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Amanda Thompson's double-double sparked the Bears against the Owls. Thompson registered six points and six rebounds in the second half. The Hayesville, N.C. native also chipped in three assists and swiped four steals.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer claimed an early 12-7 advantage in the opening quarter as Kahlia Lawrence buried eight of the team's first 12 points. However, the Owls ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to take the 19-14 advantage after the first quarter.
Â
FAU extended its lead to a game-high 10 points late in the second quarter. However, back-to-back threes from sharpshooter, KeKe Calloway, trimmed the Owls lead to just 30-26 at the half.
Â
Mercer would not go away quietly, outscoring FAU by a total of 19-10 in the third quarter to take the 45-40 advantage. Lawrence tallied seven points in the quarter on three-of-four shooting including one three pointer.
Â
The Owls scored first in the final quarter to trim the Mercer lead to three. However, the Bears would not let FAU any closer, stretching their lead to a game-high 11 points with 1:13 remaining in the contest to hold the Owls at bay.
Â
NOTABLES
"Really proud of the way we handled adversity today," stated Gardner. "We didn't have our best first half so I challenged Amanda and I thought she did an exceptional job of bouncing back in the second half, ending up with a double-double. I have to continue giving credit to Sydni for running the team and getting us in the right sets when they ran different defenses. We got in foul trouble and had a couple of players foul out so we went small with our lineup and battled till the end. This was a really good road trip for us."
