Bears Fall to Hot-Shooting Patriots, 79-68
12/3/2016 7:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FAIRFAX, Va. – Ria'n Holland scored 17 points while Jordan Strawberry and Demetre Rivers added 16 apiece for Mercer but the Bears couldn't stop a hot-shooting George Mason team in a 79-68 loss on Saturday.
Marquise Moore had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead George Mason (6-3) to its fifth straight win.
Moore was 6 of 11 from the floor and made 9 of 11 free throw attempts. Otis Livingston added 17 points with a career-best seven assists and Ian Boyd chipped in 11 points for the Patriots (6-3). George Mason's last five-game winning streak was the 2011-12 season.
The Patriots had a 35-34 lead at the half and pushed that to 57-50 midway through the final period. Jordan Strawberry hit a jumper as Mercer closed to 73-65 with 2:31 left. Moore made six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
The Patriots were 17 of 23 from the free throw line while Mercer (4-4) made 6 of 9.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Jordan Strawberry scored 16 points, dished out five assists and brought down three rebounds in a quietly impressive performance for the Bears. The junior guard was 6 of 13 from the field and played in 36 of the game's 40 minutes.
STAT OF THE GAME
The hot-shooting Patriots were 50 percent from the field (27 of 54) and made an impressive 47.1 percent (8 of 17) from downtown in the game.
RECORDS UPDATE
"They shot it a lot better than they have been shooting it from the three-point line. We were trying to take away the drives and we did a good job of that but they shot almost 50 percent from three. When the separation got 8 to 10 they didn't think about it as much and just let it go. We didn't shoot it quite as well as we would have liked from the three-point line. We probably took a little too many on some rotations."
"Early on we were moving the ball fantastic. We were really looking for each other and those are the things we have to continue to get better at, along with our toughness. I thought we battled and we fought the game but we had opportunities put ourselves in a better position but it really hurt us on those possessions where we weren't able to finish with a rebound."
"We played an Atlantic 10 team on the road and we played an Atlantic 10 team earlier in the week. That might be as good of basketball as there is in the country right now, with the exception of a few power conferences. We are getting stretched. We just have to keep them together, keep them believing and I still believe this team can be special."
On Demetre Rivers:
"He was really strong with the ball. He just has to keep getting stronger with the ball. He has worked on his game. You'd love to see him have success, as we would for all of our guys, but that guy works really hard. I was thankful he was able to get some to go."
On Jordan Strawberry:
"Jordan played with a hurt leg and he didn't seem to be phased by it. Maybe in some ways it helped because it slowed him down and he had chances to take some shots he might not have normally taken, he might have drove by at full speed. I love the way he competed."
