GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Senior Hod'Abalo Isak Padio tallied a thrilling 3-set victory over Kennesaw State's Leon Peranovic on Thursday, but was ousted by 10th-seeded Erik Schiessl of Florida State in the Round of 32 to highlight action for the Mercer men's tennis team at the Florida-hosted ITA Southeast Regional Championships over the weekend.
Â
Padio also teamed up with fellow senior Nemanja Stefanovic to register a 1-1 mark in doubles competition at the event. The MU tandem knocked off Florida Gulf Coast's Mika Bunjes and Gustav Hasslegren by an 8-6 score, before falling 8-5 to Georgia's Derrick Chen and Santiago Giamichelle in the second round.
Â
A Togo native and second-year player for the Bears, Padio dropped his opening set to Peranovic, 6-3, before rallying back from a 5-4 deficit in the second set to win 7-5. He finished off the KSU freshman with a convincing 6-1 score in the third set. Schiessl outdid Padio in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4, on Friday morning, however.
Â
Stefanovic picked up a singles win at the event as well, yielding just one game in a straight-sets win over Kennesaw State's Anthony Weingarten in Friday's consolation action.
Â
The Bears will close out the fall portion of their 2025-26 schedule, Oct. 30-Nov. 2, when they head to Spartanburg, S.C., for the Wofford Invitational.
