
Bears Top Dayton, Drexel To Open 2024 Season

MACON – The Mercer softball team combined for 26 hits, including six of the extra-base variety, and crossed the plate 16 times on the way to registering wins over Dayton and Drexel to open their season on Friday at Sikes Field. The Bears topped the Flyers by a 5-3 count in their season opener, before holding off Drexel, 11-9, in Friday's nightcap of the 2024 Heart of Georgia Classic.
The results gave the Bears their first 2-0 start under head coach Lindsay Fico, while the afternoon win over the Atlantic-10 favorite Flyers (1-1) gave MU a season-opening victory for the second-straight season. Drexel (0-2) fell to 1-2 all-time in the series with the Orange & Black.
Junior Kassidy Moore shattered school records for both home runs (3) and RBI (9) on a 4-for-4 night in the scoring melee against the Dragons, while junior Tori Hedgecock homered and drove in three runs in the triumph over Dayton. SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year Grace Taylor (1-0) grabbed the win in the opener with a complete game 5-hitter.
