Harris Earns Preseason All-Conference Nod
MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference office released the annual volleyball preseason coaches’ poll on Tuesday afternoon and Mercer’s Charlotte Harris was named to the preseason all-conference team. In the predicted standings, the league’s coaches slotted Mercer in seventh place.
After a junior campaign that saw her earn the coveted Libero of the Year honor, Harris was one of eight players named to the preseason All-Atlantic Sun team. Harris and Florida Gulf Coast senior Holly Youngquist were the only liberos on the preseason all-conference team.
Last season, Harris held the conference lead in digs per set from wire-to-wire, finishing the regular season with a total of 618 digs. Harris’ league-leading dig total also marked a program-best single-season tally.
Belmont’s Maggie Johnson was tabbed the preseason Player of the Year, while Youngquist garnered preseason Libero of the Year.
In the team rankings, Mercer collected 45 points, four short of Jacksonville for sixth place. Lipscomb earned a league-best 85 points, marking the third straight season the team was predicted to finish atop the standings. The Lady Bisons also were also picked to defend their 2010 A-Sun tournament title.
Kennesaw State (79) was slotted second, while Belmont (77), FGCU (72) and East Tennesee State (68) rounded out the top five teams.
Mercer came in one point ahead of North Florida, while Stetson (17) and USC Upstate (14) were picked ninth and tenth, respectively.
Points are awarded in descending order, with a first-place vote being worth 10 points and a 10th-place vote being worth one point.
Mercer’s season begins on August 26, when the team battles Davidson at the Winthrop Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
