Volleyball Plays Host to Savannah State Tuesday Night

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women’s volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of the University Center Tuesday, hosting Savannah State in non-conference action at 6 p.m.

Last Time Out

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Mercer junior outside hitter Amiee Frutchey had a combined 31 kills and 22 digs in two matches as the Bears split a pair of non-conference volleyball matches in the second day of the South Carolina State Spikefest.  Mercer downed Hampton 3-1 ( 25-16, 25-18, 20-25, 25-15) Saturday morning before being upended by South Carolina State 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19, 15-23).

Scouting the Opposition

Savannah State returns five starters from last year’s team that finished 11-19.  The Tigers are currently 2-10 after most recently falling to Providence 3-0 on Sept. 17.

Mercer is unbeaten in 13 all-time meetings with Savannah State.  The last time the teams met, Mercer swept the Tigers on Nov. 7, 2006.

Savannah State is averaging an impressive 1.29 aces per set.  The Tigers rank 158th in the nation in aces per set.

Game Notes

Mercer senior middle blocker Libby Hansch was named to the South Carolina State Spikefest  All-Tournament team after leading the Bears to a 2-1 record at the event.  Hansch tallied 17 kills and 11 total blocks in three matches.  

Mercer libero Charlotte Harris top the A-Sun and ranks 59th in the nation in digs per set (4.82).

Mercer is 2-1 at the University Center this year after hosting the Bear Brawl on Sept. 3-4.  Mercer fell to Presbyterian before downing UT Marin and The Citadel.
