Volleyball Travels to Nashville for First A-Sun Action

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer volleyball team begins its Atlantic Sun conference schedule in Nashville this weekend, challenging the last two teams to hoist the league championship trophy.  The Bears meet the Lipscomb on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. before challenging Belmont Saturday at 3 p.m.

Last Time Out

MACON, Ga. – Mercer sophomore Jamie Duffy spiked 10 kills with just one error, but her effort wasn’t enough to stop UNC Asheville from claiming a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-16) victory over the Bears in Tuesday night’s non-conference volleyball match at the University Center.

Scouting the Opposition

Lipscomb

Lipscomb is the defending Atlantic Sun Champions after compiling a 26-3 (20-0 A-Sun) regular season record in 2009.  Last season, the Lady Bisons entered the A-Sun tournament as the No. 1 seed for the second straight season and cruised past Belmont and Florida Gulf Coast on their way to an NCAA tournament berth.

Lipscomb has won 25 straight conference regular season matches dating back to 2008 and is currently 11-5 overall.

The Lady Bisons return six starters from last year’s team, including 2010 A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year Stefine “Jake” Pease and 2009 A-Sun Player of the Year Alex Kelly.

Lipscomb leads the all-time series with Mercer, 10-6.

Belmont

Belmont returns six starters from last year’s team that finished 18-15 (13-7 A-Sun).

The Bruins are currently 6-11 after most recently falling to Florida Gulf Coast in non-conference action on Sept. 25.

Belmont leads the all-time series with Mercer, 8-6.  The last time the teams met, Mercer took a 3-0 victory on Oct. 16, 2009.
