Women's Golf Adds Meredith Owen

MACON, Ga.- Mercer women's golf coach Gary Guyer announced the signing of Meredith Owen of Madison, Ga. on Wednesday. Owen comes from Morgan County High School and is set to join the Bears in the fall of 2012.

"We are very excited that Meredith has chosen to attend Mercer and join the Mercer women's golf program," head coach Gary Guyer said. "Her junior golfing career was successful and she is a solid player. What makes Meredith special is her athletic ability and mental toughness. Now that she is working full time with The Legend, Bobby Hix, her game will elevate to another level. We are looking forward to Meredith joining our Mercer family."

Owen has placed among the top-15 players in all seven tournaments she has competed in since March.  Over that stretch she has three top-five finishes, including a second place finish at the Athens Junior Shootout.  In that event, she carded scored of 77 and 76 in two rounds of competition.

In addition to being an excellent golfer, Owen excels in the classroom.  Currently, Owen holds a 4.0 GPA and is ranked 3rd in her class. She is an AP Scholar with honors, member of the National Honor Society and a Georgia Certificate of Merit recipient. She plans to major in Biomedical Engineering.

“Every time I watch Meredith she continues to impress me with her game,” Guyer said.  “She is quiet in nature but let’s her game talk big. Meredith has a compact game and we look for her to come in next year and be ready to step up and play immediately.  Like all our players, she is very strong academically.”

Meredith was born on December 7, 1993 in Greenville S. C. She is the oldest daughter of Chip and Kim Owen. She has a sister, Emily and brother, Will. She enjoys snowboarding, reading, running, spending time with friends, and watching movies. Meredith’s favorite vacation spots are Jacksonville Beach, Fla. and Breckenridge, Colo. One of her greatest golf thrills to date is shooting a 32 during a high school tournament.

Owen works with Bobby Hix, head teaching professional at The Idle Hour Club in Macon, Ga.
