JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two Mercer women’s golfers fired final round 80’s as the Bears retained their fifth place position in the Jacksonville University Classic at Hidden Hills Country Club. Mercer’s fifth place finish came by virtue of a two-round total of 642.
Mercer’s 327 on Tuesday paired with a first round 315 and placed the Bears six strokes behind Florida Gulf Coast for fourth place in the team standings. Daytona State College notched a tournament low 303 on Tuesday and captured the title with a two round total of 613. Miami and Jacksonville tied for second place with scores of 620.
“I thought we were prepared for this tournament,” Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. “We were out there hitting good golf shots, but we’ve got to learn how to score better. Now it’s back to the drawing board and we look to improve from here.”
Freshman Lacey Fears and junior Alicia Poole both turned in 80’s on Tuesday to lead the Orange and Black. Fears took home Mercer’s top individual finish as her 80 came in conjunction with an opening round 79. Fear’s cumulative score of 159 placed her 15th among the 41-golfer field.
Poole’s 80 was a one-stroke improvement on her first round score and slotted her 19th individually.
Aurelie Wiriath signed for an 85 on Tuesday, moving her tournament total to 160 and placing the sophomore in a tie for 16th place.
Wiriath’s classmate, Kimmy Graff, employed 82 strokes in the final round and tied Miami’s Patricia Arana for 20th place overall. Both Graff and Arana posted two-round totals of 162.
Sophomore Kaitlin Marrin rounded out Mercer’s competitors with a final round 87 and a 30th place finish.
Mercer resumes its spring schedule at the Coastal Georgia Invitational on February 14. The two round event will be held at Retreat Golf Course in Sea Island, Ga.
