Women’s Basketball Defeated at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA, Ga. – Freshman Briana Williams scored a team-high 12 points as the women’s basketball team fell to Georgia Tech, 101-44 on Tuesday night at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Georgia Tech captured its seventh-straight win and improved to 10-4 while Mercer fell to 1-10.
Four Georgia Tech players scored in double figures, paced by freshman guard Tyaunna Marshall’s game-high 25. Georgia Tech senior Deja Foster finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth career double-double performance.
After Georgia Tech controlled the opening tip, Mercer freshman Brittnee Hazel forced a turnover when she fronted her defender and knocked away the entry pass. Hazel’s effort led to a basket for sophomore Kendra Grant on the other end, putting the Bears ahead, 2-0.
Hazel’s steal defined the Mercer defensive effort in the opening minutes, as a scrappy Bears defense forced the Yellow Jackets into four turnovers in the opening five minutes of play.
All told, Mercer forced the Yellow Jackets into 19 turnovers on Tuesday.
After the Bears scored first, the host Yellow Jackets employed a 16-0 surge that elapsed over seven and a half minutes.
Later in the half, Georgia Tech led 24-7 before freshman Sharnea Boykin hit a pull up jumper with 9:39 to go. Boykin’s basket sparked a 10-4 run that saw the Bears trim their deficit to 11 (28-17) with 7:17 to play.
After the Mercer flurry, Georgia Tech gained control, extending their lead to 23 (51-28) before intermission.
Mercer’s 28 first-half points were more than Georgia Tech allowed Washington to score in the entirety of its last game. In that contest, Georgia Tech prevailed 60-27.
Before Mercer scored 28 in the opening period Tuesday, Georgia Tech had only allowed 28 points in the first half six times this season. The teams that scored 28 or more points against the Yellow Jackets in the opening 20 minutes are among the country’s best, including No. 1 Connecticut, No. 4 Tennessee, No. 12 Georgetown, No. 21 Georgia, Northwestern and Old Dominion.
After intermission, the hosts clamped down on the defensive end. Mercer was held scoreless for the first 11:06 of the second stanza and Georgia Tech pushed its lead to as many as 58 before the final buzzer.
Tuesday’s game marked Mercer’s final non-conference competition of the regular season. The Bears resume Atlantic Sun play hosting ETSU on January 3 at 5 p.m.
