Lipscomb Claims a Pair of Wins Against Mercer
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team dropped a pair of Atlantic Sun games to Lipscomb on Saturday, falling by scores of 8-2 and 5-2 at Sikes Field. The games marked the Bears' senior day event, as six seniors were recognized between games.
Lipscomb moved to 30-14 (8-6 A-Sun) with the wins while Mercer was eliminated from contention for an Atlantic Sun tournament berth and fell to 24-24 (5-11 A-Sun).
Mercer's highlight of the day came in the final inning of game two, as senior Lilli Luke mashed a solo home run in her final at-bat at Sikes Field. Luke's homer was her second in consecutive days and marked Mercer's final run tally in the game.
Fellow senior Kassie Bailey pitched admirably in game two, allowing just three earned runs in seven innings pitched. Despite her efforts, the Lady Bison were able to plate runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings to earn the sweep.
Sophomore Krista Kennedy joined Luke in the RBI column of game two, finishing the contest 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore McKenzie Woody also had a pair of hits in the loss, pushing her league-leading batting average to .438.
Lipscomb redshirt freshman Ashley Anderson was credited with the win in game two, scattering eight hits over seven innings while racking up four strikeouts. The win lifted Anderson's personal record to 9-5 on the season.
In game one, Lipscomb scored six runs in the first two innings, capped by a two-out grand slam off the bat of junior Kelsey Cartwright.
Mercer responded with a run in the second inning, and got a solid relief pitching performance from junior Kerri Nidiffer the rest of the way. Nidiffer held the Lady Bison scoreless in four of her five and one-third innings pitched, tallying three strikeouts along the way.
Bailey was credited with the loss in both games and dropped to 9-12 on the season. Lipscomb senior Whitney Kiihnl took the win, boosting her season mark to 21-9.
Nine Mercer players collected a hit in the game one loss, but the Bears were unable to string those hits together and only mustered two runs in the loss.
The Bears return to action with a mid-week non-conference doubleheader at South Alabama. The double-dip against the Jaguars is slated for a 2 p.m. start on Wednesday.
