Men's Tennis Can't Solve ETSU, 6-1

MACON, Ga. – Mercer University's men's tennis teams ran into a buzzsaw in Atlantic Sun Conference leader East Tennessee State University, losing 6-1 at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center. The Bears fell to 7-11 overall and are 4-5 in the A-Sun.

The Buccaneers (15-6, 9-1 A-Sun) won all three doubles matches to open the afternoon, garnering the team point for doubles to make it 1-0.

Mercer freshman Guilherme Frias grabbed the Bears' lone team point at the No. 5 singles slot. Frias dropped the opening set to ETSU's Roger Ordeig, 6-3, but bounced back to win the second set, 6-1. Frias then won the super-tiebreaker by a 10-8 score.

The MU team, while losing five of six singles matches, went down swinging. At No. 2 singles, Fernando Armendaris won the first set 7-6 (7-0 in the tiebreaker), only to fall 6-3, 10-5 in the next two sets.

It was much the same at No. 6 singles for junior David Barton, who also lost in three sets. Like Armendaris, Barton was a 7-6 winner in the first set (7-5 in the tiebreaker), but then lost the second set 6-3 and the super-tiebreaker, 10-8. The loss was Barton's first in A-Sun play and snapped a personal six-match win streak overall.
