Heavner Named to A-Sun All-Tournament Team

MACON, Ga. – Mercer junior midfielder Joey Heavner was recognized for his play in this past week’s 2011 A-Sun Men’s Soccer Championship when he was voted onto the All-Tournament Team on Sunday afternoon.

 

In voting conducted by the six head coaches of the teams in the tournament as well as select media members, Heavner was honored on the 11-man squad for his play in helping the Bears to the semi-finals of the A-Sun Championship for the second time in the past three seasons.

 

Florida Gulf Coast’s freshman goalkeeper Nathan Ingham was named the 2011 Atlantic Sun Championship Most Valuable Player. FGCU had five total members on the team after outlasting sixth-seeded East Tennessee State, 1-0, in the championship game on Sunday afternoon.

 

Heavner has had a busy past week and a half collecting awards due to his stellar play over the course of the 2011 season. To go along with this A-Sun All-Tournament selection, Heavner was also named to the A-Sun Men's Soccer Academic All-Conference team and the A-Sun Men’s Soccer All-Conference second team.

 

For the season, the Landisville, Pa. native set a career-high in points with nine, on one goal and seven assists. Heavner currently ranks tied for second in the A-Sun and 29th in the nation with seven assists and scored his lone goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Belmont on October 30.

 

Mercer’s 2011 season came to end on Friday afternoon when it dropped a 2-1 decision in the semi-finals of the A-Sun Men’s Soccer Championship to eventual champion FGCU. The Bears finish the season with a 9-8-3 overall record, giving the Orange and Black back-to-back campaigns with a winning record for the first time since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
