Men’s Golf Ties for Seventh at Memphis Intercollegiate
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Junior Josh Cone fired a 76 on the final day of the Memphis Intercollegiate to help the Mercer men’s golf team tie for seventh at Colonial Country Club. Cone’s 76 came in conjunction with 144 strokes (70-74) in the opening two rounds to place the Thomasville native tied for sixth overall.
“It was a pretty frustrating day overall,” Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said. “Our guys battled tough weather conditions with a tornado warning for most of the day.”
Mercer’s total team score of 899 equaled Louisiana-Lafayette’s effort and outpaced Iowa State (901), Arkansas State (902), Louisiana Tech (903), Marshall (907), Southern Mississippi (908), Wisconsin (930) and Army (940).
South Alabama captured the title with a two-day total of 878, seven strokes fewer than Akron. Missouri (892), Memphis (894), Arkansas Little Rock (896) and Tulsa (897) rounded out the top six teams.
Sophomore Matt Kocolowski had the low round for Mercer on Tuesday, carding a two-under 70. Kocolowski’s final round lifted the Apopka, Fla. native from 63rd place after the second round to a top-40 finish.
“I was proud of Kocolowski,” Tredway said. “He really played well today and did his part. Cone had another outstanding tournament. We just need to fill in some missing pieces and get a little better.”
Freshman Mookie DeMoss wrapped up the tournament tied for 28th place after shooting 76 on Tuesday. Junior Stefan Labuschagne needed 80 strokes to complete Tuesday’s round while sophomore John Gregory Joseph posted an 81 to finish tied for 50th.
“We had an opportunity to beat some very highly ranked teams so this is pretty difficult knowing we have a three month break until we get to tee it up again.”
Mercer returns to the links with its spring season opener at the Jacksonville Invitational on Feb. 1, 2011.
