Meason, Tribby Wrap Up Linger Longer Among Top 20
GREENSBORO, Ga. – Matt Tribby, William Meason and Matt Kocolowski all recorded two-over, 74's on the final day of the Linger Longer Invitational at Reynolds Landing. Meason tied for 13th place while Tribby tied for 19th in the 93-golfer field.
As a team, the Bears posted a cumulative score of 298 on Sunday. No. 1 Oklahoma State took home the title, posting a three-day total of 865. Mercer was disqualified from team placement due to a scorecard error in the first round.
"I'm excited about how the team played amidst a hard situation," Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said. "We put together two of the better rounds of the season and it couldn't have come at a better time."
Despite the disqualification, Mercer was one of seven teams at the event to post multiple sub-300 rounds.
Meason's 74 came in conjunction with an opening round 74 and a second-round 71 to tie for 13th place. The Alpharetta, Ga. native equaled Georgia Tech's Chesson Hadley's three-day total of 219.
"William played absolutely phenomenal this week," Tredway said. "I'm usually not one for talking about bad breaks but he got a bad one at the end of the round. He should be really proud of the way he played and he has really turned himself into a good player."
Tribby's 74 on Sunday gave the senior a three-day total of 221, good enough to tie for 19th place. Tribby's classmate, Matt Smith fired a 76 in the final round.
"Matt Tribby sure played well this week," Tredway said. "I really like how he's taken the things we've been working on and has managed to incorporate them into his own game. I think he's turned a big corner and it couldn't come at a better time."
"Smith has been getting more solid each week," said Tredway. "He's done it though hard work and it's great to see some of the fruits of that labor."
Tribby and Smith will be called upon to lead the Bears down the stretch of their final season in Orange and Black. The seniors' resurgence comes with just one event left before the Atlantic Sun Championships (April 19-21). The final tune-up begins April 3 at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate.
