Men's Basketball Adds Kymon Woods to Fold for 2011-12

MACON, Ga. – Mercer University men’s basketball head coach Bob Hoffman has announced that Kymon Woods (Gainesville, Ga./East Hall H.S.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Bears beginning with the 2011-12 season.

Woods - a 6-4, 190-lb., guard - brings along some impressive credentials as he becomes the third new player inked to join MU’s strong corps of returning players for next season.

Woods was a four-year varsity player under EHHS head coach Joseph Dix. Woods’ teams amassed a record of 81-37 during his prep career and made two Elite Eight and one Sweet 16 appearance in the Georgia state championships during his tenure on the hardwood.

“We are very excited to have Kymon join our program and for the things we believe he will add to our team,” Hoffman said. “He is a prototype Mercer basketball player. He plays the game of basketball with great intensity and passion at both ends of the floor, as his statistics show.

“He also has the right temperament and personality to be a good fit with the rest of our team, which is one of those ‘intangibles’ that no stat sheet could tell you.”

As a senior, Woods earned First Team All-State accolades from the GACA, as well as all-state honorable mention from the Georgia sportswriters. He was a two-time first-team all-region selection as a sophomore and senior (missing part of his junior year after suffering a knee injury). He was also voted all-area by the Gainesville Times those same two seasons.

Woods tallied more than 700 career points, despite missing much of his third high school season.  He had a stellar senior campaign, averaging 15.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.1 steals per game. Woods also shot for quality, hitting 50 percent from the field overall, 41 percent from beyond the arc and 79 percent from the free throw stripe.

“Kymon is an outstanding young man who has developed into a great player,” Dix added. “He has overcome a lot to get to this point. He is mentally tough and brings great versatility to the game. He will continue to get better.”

Woods is expected to major in either engineering or art at Mercer.
