MACON, Ga. – Senior Sasha LaGarde notched the first multi-home run game of his career to lift the Mercer baseball team to a 12-4 win over Florida A&M on Tuesday evening.
LaGarde went 3-for-4 in the contest with a double, two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored to pace a Mercer (4-0) offense that tallied five extra base hits in the win.
The multi-home run game for LaGarde was the first by an Atlantic Sun Conference player this season and the first by a player in a Mercer uniform since Travis Benn accomplished the feat in a 10-1 over then No. 12 Georgia Tech on April 2, 2013.
Mercer jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first after a solo home run by LaGarde and an RBI single by senior Austin Barrett made the score 2-0 Bears.
The Orange and Black really put some distance between themselves and Florida A&M with a four-run bottom of the second inning. An RBI groundout by junior Chesny Young, back-to-back RBI singles by senior Derrick Workman and Barrett and a bases loaded walk by junior Devin Bonin accounted for the scoring in the frame to give Mercer a 6-0 advantage.
The Rattlers would eventually get within shouting distance of the Bears, at 8-4, before a bases clearing triple by Bonin secured Mercer's 12-4 win.
Freshman Ryan Askew got the start for the Bears and pitched well, allowing just one earned run on eight hits to go along with five strikeouts over 4.2 innings pitched.
Senior Stephen Glaze earned the win for Mercer, his second of the young 2014 season, by tossing 2.1 innings of shutout relief.
Mercer concludes its mid-week series against Florida A&M on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Claude Smith Field.
