Moorhouse, Workman Propel Bears to 13-5 Win over Florida A&M

MACON, Ga. – Sophomores Nate Moorhouse and Derrick Workman each had two hits and three RBI to lift the Mercer baseball team to a 13-5 win over Florida A&M on Wednesday afternoon at Claude Smith Field.

 

Mercer (16-7) scored 13 runs on Florida A&M for the second-straight day and has now scored 10 or more runs in a game nine times this season.

 

With the score 2-1 Mercer in the third inning, the Bears exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Workman launched a three-run home run to highlight the surge that put the Orange and Black ahead, 6-1.

 

After the Rattlers pushed three runs across in the top of the fourth of once again make a game of it, the Bears rallied for three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to re-establish control of the contest. A three-run long ball by Moorhouse, his second career home run, put Mercer ahead to stay with a score of 9-4.

 

Freshman Dimitri Kourtis collected his team leading fourth win of the season after coming into the game and throwing 2.1 innings of shutout relief.

  

Freshman Chesny Young tied a season-high with three hits while redshirt sophomore Austin Barrett went 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI.

 

Mercer is back on the road again this weekend when it travels up to Nashville for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series with Lipscomb. Game one of the three-game set is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday night at Ken Dugan Stadium.
