Bears Carry Over 2010 Success into Summer League Play

MACON, Ga. – After a record setting 38-win 2010 campaign and an appearance in the NCAA Atlanta Regionals earlier this month, members of the Mercer baseball team began its summer baseball assignments in various leagues across the country.

 

Mercer currently has nine returning letterwinners in summer leagues, including three players in the Atlanta Collegiate League, two players in the Great Lakes League, two players in the Northwoods League, two players in the Coastal Plain League and one player in the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association.  

 

Below is a list of the Bears 2010 summer league assignments and some statistics showing how they have performed for their respective teams’ to date.

 

Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association

Sophomore Brandon Love (Palm Springs Power) – Love has compiled a microscopic 0.75 ERA and a 1-0 overall record so far for the Power … Love earned his first start of his summer campaign against the East LA Dodgers and allowed just one run in four innings pitched … Love picked up his first win of the season after throwing four innings of scoreless relief against the San Francisco Seals.

 

Great Lakes League

Junior JT Odom (Lima Locos) – Odom is thriving so far this summer as the closer for the Locos … Odom currently has a 0-1 overall record and has compiled a 2.16 ERA in five appearances this season … Odom does have one save and batters are only hitting .143 against him in 8.1 innings pitched this season.

 

Junior Russell Moses (Lima Locos) – Moses has joined his Mercer teammate Odom as one of the top pitchers on the Locos staff this season … Moses has a 0-0 record this season with a 4.50 ERA … Moses has started two games and has allowed three hits in seven innings pitched.

 

Northwoods League

Sophomore Jacob Tanis (Alexandria Beetles) – Tanis continues to swing a hot bat this summer after being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 26th round of the 2010 MLB Draft… Tanis has made the transition over to wood bats nicely, as he is batting .400 (20-52) this season to go along with a team-high four home runs and 15 RBI.

 

Sophomore David Randall (Alexandria Beetles) – Randall is having an excellent summer season so far in a multitude of roles … the lefty has started, appeared in relief and even closed out a game for the Beetles this summer … the lefty has a 1-0 overall record with a 0.00 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched … Randall has given up only two hits thus far to go along with nine strikeouts and batters are hitting just .167 against him.

 

Coastal Plain League

Sophomore Billy Burns (Edenton Steamers) – Burns is another Bear who has put up solid numbers up to this point in summer ball … Burns is hitting .294 (15-51) with 11 runs scored and 15 RBI, good for the second-most on the Steamers … Burns has a .413 on-base percentage to go along with five stolen bases.

 

Sunbelt League

Freshman Evan Boyd (Douglasville Bulls) – No stats listed.

 

Freshman Colby Collins (South Atlanta Phillies) – No stats listed.

 

Freshman Austin Barrett (South Atlanta Phillies) – No stats listed.
