74 All-Academic Honorees: Bears Tear it up in the Classroom for Winter-Spring
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University’s student-athletes in the winter-spring sports – following the strong example set by their fall-sport counterparts – had a total of 74 honorees on the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic honor roll. To be named A-Sun All-Academic, a student-athlete must achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the classroom during their semester of competition.
Sports included from the Bears’ intercollegiate program were: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf.
Percentage-wise, MU’s women’s golf team had seven of its eight roster players – 88 percent – named A-Sun All-Academic. The Bears’ baseball team – which had the largest roster size from among the school’s winter-spring sports – boasted a total of 20 awards out of its 29 team members (69 percent).
Men’s basketball had 10 players recognized, while women’s hoops had seven. The men’s golf team placed six members on the squad, with softball adding 16 players. The men’s and women’s tennis teams each had four squad members achieve the criteria for the academic awards.
Coupled with the Fall A-Sun All-Academic Awards, Mercer had a total of 139 student-athletes recognized for excelling in the classroom this year, slightly more than 68 percent. MU had the fourth-best percentage from among the A-Sun’s 11 schools.
