adidas "All In" With Mercer Athletics as Official Supplier
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University Athletics has announced that it has signed a five-year partnership with adidas America in which the Portland, Ore., based company will become the official supplier of apparel and footwear for the Bears’ 16 intercollegiate athletics teams.
“We are proud to have forged this relationship with a globally-known company like adidas,” MU Director of Athletics Jim Cole said. “We appreciate their willingness to supply our student-athletes and coaches with top flight products that will aid in their development and training, while also providing apparel to enhance the look and presence for our support staff.”
Although his team does not officially begin play until 2013, Head Football Coach Bobby Lamb has worked with adidas in the past and is excited about its prospects for the future with Mercer.
“I have had the opportunity to have adidas as an official sponsor in the past and I can honestly say that it was a great experience,” Lamb said. “They not only provided us with equipment that helped us reach optimal results, but their uniforms gave us a unique and distinct look. In building this football program, the element of ‘style’ is going to carry a similar amount of weight as ‘substance’, in some respects, as we build our brand.”
Several of Mercer’s teams already currently use adidas apparel, including men’s soccer, men’s basketball and volleyball.
“adidas has always been a very good supplier for our gear and I am ecstatic that they will now be a partner with our entire athletics department,” MU Men’s Basketball Head Coach Bob Hoffman added. “I believe having an official supplier such as adidas can be nothing but a positive move forward for our department.”
Mercer’s partnership with adidas will be the first-ever venture by the Bears’ athletics program to have a department-wide official outfitter. Daniel Tate, assistant athletics director for marketing (and who brokered the arrangement), believes there can be far-reaching benefits.
“A partnership such as this not only has financial ramifications for our department, but also helps as you build a consistent identity and look in your branding efforts,” Tate explained. “There is also a certain ‘credibility’ that is added when a worldwide company such as adidas is willing to put its name side-by-side with yours. That association will help us market Mercer Athletics in the future and could open the door to many other opportunities.”
Other NCAA Division I adidas partners include: Arkansas, Cincinnati, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, UCLA, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Northwestern. Mercer is the only Atlantic Sun Conference member to boast adidas as its official apparel supplier.
