Raynor Steps Down as MU Softball Head Coach

MACON, Ga. – Mercer University softball head coach Mike Raynor – making what he termed was “one of the most difficult choices” he has ever had to make – has decided to step down from his position effective immediately. Raynor had been the Bears’ field boss on the softball diamond for five seasons.

Raynor pointed to the rapidly declining health of his mother and a desire to spend more time with his family as the factors for his decision. It was a choice that tore at the 37-year veteran of the sport of softball.

“Coaching Mercer University’s softball team was my ‘dream job’,” Raynor said. “But sometimes life throws some things at you that make you re-evaluate your priorities. Throughout my five years at Mercer, I was proud to be a part of the University…and the Bears’ program will always have a place in my heart. Our teams always prided themselves on making sure we portrayed the image that Mercer expected from its student-athletes.

“I was constantly energized and inspired with the attitude and philosophy of the Mercer administration and President Bill Underwood, who recognized, promoted and supported the student-athletes at Mercer.  The rigorous academic standards and expectations brought out the best in our people and it was a great pleasure to be a part of such a rewarding and results-driven environment.

“To step away is hard. I have to thank (former athletics director) Bobby Pope for hiring me and giving me the chance to guide the program.  I also want to thank (current athletics director) Jim Cole for working with me in a ‘people kind of way’ that allowed me time to step back and make this decision.”

Raynor’s tenure with the Bears’ softball program drew praise from Cole, as well as understanding regarding his personal situation.

“You always hate to see a coach with Mike’s enthusiasm, love of the game and ability to guide student-athletes walk away from coaching,” Cole said. “However, we all know that sometimes things come up in the blink of an eye which can change our perspective in life. I can certainly respect and understand what Mike is dealing with.

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Mercer community are with him during this difficult time. His accomplishments and efforts have elevated our softball program to new heights. Even if he’s not in our dugout anymore, Mike Raynor will always be a part of the Mercer Bears softball family.”

In his five seasons at the Mercer helm, Raynor had a composite record of 143-146 (.495). He reached a program record 40-win plateau in 2009, when the Bears went 40-19. He surpassed the 30-win mark in both 2008 and 2011, earning 32 victories in each of those seasons.

“I hate it for the players and recruits,” Raynor reflected about his decision. “However, they are still coming to a great school and will have an excellent college experience at Mercer. I wish the players and program well; and we all know that great things happen to, and for, great people.”

Mercer softball assistant coach Kelley Bretscher remains on staff and is currently handling the day-to-day operations for the program.

According to Cole, an immediate search will begin for Raynor’s replacement. “Our commitment is to bring in the best possible coach to fill some big shoes left by Mike,” Cole said. “It will be exciting as we try to find that person who can build on what Mike accomplished and take our program to an even higher level.”
