MACON, Ga. –
The Mercer women’s soccer team added a fitting bookend to their 2009 season on Monday night as head coach Grant Serafy applauded the effort of his team in the annual awards banquet at the University Center.
The evening was a celebration of a successful 2009 campaign in which the Mercer women’s soccer team had their fourth consecutive winning conference record, earned their fourth straight trip to the conference tournament, and had their third consecutive overall winning record.
“It was a nice evening and was a way for us to highlight the many positives the team accomplished this season and to recognize those individual players that excelled in various areas,” Serafy said.
Serafy commended the players and parents for all of their contributions in another successful season. A season in which saw the team get off to a slow start and while Mercer assistant coach Samar Azem presented a highlight video to conclude the evening.
Those players Serafy recognized included:
Co-MVP – Junior Defender Kacie Hudson and Sophomore Midfielder Olivia Tucker
Golden Boot (top scorer) – Olivia Tucker (second year in a row)
MV Attacker – Sophomore Forward Emerald Phillips
MV Defender – Freshman Defender PA Upson
Overall Evaluation Top Perfomer – Olivia Tucker for field players and Cagney Valloch for goalkeepers
Most Balls Won (based on winning balls in the air) – Olivia Tucker
The 2009 Bears saw a multitude of twists and turns throughout the season. After starting out 5-6-1, the Orange and Black went 4-0-1 in their last five games of the season to clinch their fourth-straight A-Sun Championship appearance. With just three seniors being lost to graduation, the outlook for this young Mercer soccer program remains promising.
