MACON, Ga. – The awards keep coming for Mercer junior midfielder
Ian Cameron, as he was named to the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region third team on Tuesday morning.
This is the third individual award Cameron has received after a stellar 2009 campaign, going along with an Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team selection and an A-Sun Championship All-Tournament Team distinction.
“I am extremely happy that both Ian and our program were recognized with this award,” head coach
Brad Ruzzo said. “I know Ian has worked very hard to achieve this and he is well-deserving of this great honor. He became a great leader for us throughout the year, and was our most dangerous player in attack while upholding his defensive responsibilities.”
Cameron is the first Mercer player to earn a selection on an NSCAA All-South Region team since Del Olayoe was named to the All-South Region third team back in 2005.
Cameron was one of only six players from the A-Sun Conference to be recognized on an NSCAA All-South Region team. Robert Hodge Kevin Munz and Fredrik Brustad from Stetson University, Matthew Hollyoak from UNF and Vince Petrasso from Campbell University were the other five A-Sun players who earned NSCAA selections.
The Glasgow, Scotland native had a career year in leading the upstart Bears all the way to the A-Sun Championship Game. Cameron led the team in multiple statistical categories including goals, points and game-winning goals in just 17 games played this season. His seven goals and 18 points were tied for third and fourth respectively in the A-Sun Conference leaders.
Cameron, along with eight other starters, will return to Macon in 2010 under coach Ruzzo as Mercer looks to bring home its first A-Sun Championship since 2001.
