MACON, Ga. – After earning a pair of victories in the opening weekend of Atlantic Sun conference play, the Mercer women’s basketball team returns to action with a non-conference test against Georgia Southern on Friday at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
Mercer started out the season with a pair of losses against then No. 8 Oklahoma and the College of Charleston, but since then the Bears (4-2, 2-0 A-Sun) have rattled off four-straight wins. On Friday, the Bears aim to post the program’s first five-game winning streak since the 2005-06 season.
Georgia Southern enters Friday’s matchup 3-4 (2-0 SoCon) after most recently topping Elon, 70-58 on Dec. 5. The Eagles return three starters from last year’s team that finished 16-14 (11-9 SoCon).
Friday’s clash features the reigning players of the week from both the A-Sun and the SoCon. Georgia Southern senior forward J’Lisia Ogburn was honored by the SoCon after shooting 61 percent from the floor and averaging 14 points in two conference wins last week.
Mercer senior guard Courtney Ford has been named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week three-straight times. Ford is the reigning Player of the Week after recording her second triple-double of the season with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists against Belmont on Dec. 5. On Dec. 3, Ford tallied 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals as the Bears topped Lipscomb 69-59.
Mercer is 2-0 in the University Center this season while Georgia Southern is 1-3 in road games.
Mercer leads the all-time series between the schools, 31-26, but the Eagles have victories in nine of the last ten matchups between the in-state rivals. The last time the teams squared off was Dec. 15, 2004. In that game, Mercer lost 73-50 in Statesboro.
