SAPPHIRE, N.C. – The Mercer men’s golf team concluded play at Western Carolina’s Hummingbird Invitational with a combined score of 296 (+12) in Tuesday’s final round, tying for 15th place at the event. Mercer freshman
Matt Kocolowski turned in the Bears’ only sub-par round of the invitational in the last round, carding a two-under, 69 to help the Bears outshoot Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State.
Furman captured the event’s title, rallying to erase Kentucky’s six-stroke lead on the final six holes of the competition. The Paladins shot a combined 567 (-1) to edge out the Wildcats (570). Both Mercer and College of Charleston needed 591 strokes to complete the event, besting 17th place Gardner-Webb by five strokes.
Kocolowski’s solid final round helped the Apopka, Fla. native jump from 61st place after the first round into a tie for 28th place individually. Kocolowski turned in three birdies in his first five holes on Tuesday en route to the Bears’ top performance.
Mercer’s
William Meason played consistent golf, posting back-to-back scores of 74 to finish tied for 51st place individually. Meason’s classmates
Alex Street and Thomas Homes recorded a 76 and 78, respectively on their last day of fall competition. Street completed the event tied for 54th while Holmes wound up tied for 71st. Rounding out Mercer’s participants was
Devin Patel, who fired back-to-back 77’s to place in a tie for 87th.
The Bears will now have roughly three months to prepare for their spring season, scheduled to start with the John Hayt Intercollegiate on Feb. 28, 2010.
