MACON, Ga. – Mercer sophomore
Amiee Frutchey smashed a match-high 11 kills and added seven digs as the Bears claimed a sweep over USC Upstate 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-11) in Saturday afternoon’s Atlantic Sun volleyball match at the University Center.
Mercer posts its second-straight win and improves to 8-17 (6-10 A-Sun) while USC Upstate falls 7-19 (3-13 A-Sun).
“Everything we worked on all week came together for us,” Mercer head coach
Noelle Rooke said. “Our defense was phenomenal. Today everybody contributed: it was a team win.”
Mercer’s defense frustrated Spartan attackers throughout the match, holding the visitors to a -.011 hitting percentage. The Bears' blocking scheme was particularly effective as the hosts out-blocked the opposition, 10-4.
Mercer junior
Libby Hansch posted a match-high five total blocks while
Krista Hurley and
Erica Vrvilo each contributed four blocks apiece.
Aside from leading at 2-1 in both the first and second sets, USC Upstate never had a lead in the match. In the second set, the score was tied five times before the Bears captured the 25-19 win.
Mercer setters
Chelsea Gebben and
Nickie Halbert combined for 35 assists in the win. Libero
Charlotte Harris posted a team-high 11 digs.
Frutchey, Hansch, and sophomore
Anna Coursey all recorded hitting percentages greater than .300. Coursey spiked five kills with one error while Hansch contributed six kills and struck just two errors. Frutchey’s 11 kills came on 23 attempts with just four miscues.
Mercer returns to Atlantic Sun play on Nov. 6, hosting Stetson at 7 p.m.
