Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole announced on December 11, 2012 the university's approval of the formation of a school Marching Band, set to debut in the fall of 2013. Long-time Mercer Pep Band Director Doug Cowden’s was appointed Director of Bands, in charge of both the Marching and Pep bands.
The addition of the marching band coincides with the restart of football at Mercer, set to kick off its 2013 season on August 31, 2013 against Reinhardt. Mercer’s marching band will provide in-game and halftime entertainment for all eight of the Bears’ home games in 2013, while also making select road trips for exhibition performances at marching band competitions.

The Marching Band performs at all home football games and is committed to serve Mercer University, the surrounding community, and the state of Georgia. Members are expected to represent the Mercer University Marching Band and Mercer University in a dignified manner at all times.
