Andrew Tredway is in his third season as head men's golf coach at Mercer University after being named to the position on Aug. 23, 2007.
Tredway spent two years at UTPA and led the Broncs to new levels of achievement on the course and in the classroom. Under his, the Broncs produced one of the most successful in program history as they posted their first tournament championship since the 2002 season to go along with four top-five finishes in the squad's final five tournaments. Tredway made a tremendous impact on the individual performances of his squad as the Broncs had 10 players finish in the top-10 during those final five events of the season. As a team, the Broncs dropped their strokes average from 78.4 during the fall season to 76.1 in the spring, and five members of the team each saw their individual strokes average improve during the spring.
During his stint at Texas-Pan American, Tredway’s squad won the 2007 and 2006 National Minority College Golf Championship while a pair of players won individual titles under his guidance. Tredway helped guide Craig Berger and Kyle Tudi to individual championships, which was the first time in program history that two teammates each captured a tournament championship and only the second time in program history that the Broncs had two individual tournament championships under their belt. Three golfers earned postseason All-Independent accolades with one taking second team honors, one earning third team laurels and another garnering honorable mention newcomer recognition.
Academically, the Broncs posted a 3.047 GPA during the 2005-06 season, which was the second-highest team GPA for a UTPA men’s program. Seven players earned a 3.0 GPA during the school year and three were named to the UTPA Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Prior to his arrival at UTPA, Tredway spent two years as a teaching assistant for Hank Haney Golf Inc. in Dallas, Texas. In Dallas, he worked with more than 1,500 students ranging from beginning-level golfers to PGA Tour professionals. During his time with Haney, who is considered one of the premier instructors in golf, Tredway observed training sessions with Tiger Woods as well as Mark O'Meara and many others.
The Bears' head coach has helped former college teammate and current PGA Tour standout Ben Crane with his all-around game, including instruction, caddying and tournament preparation.
"Ben had done more for me than I have done for him. Working one-on-one with the world's best putter has been an invaluable experience that has made me a more complete teacher, coach and player. Though Ben, I have met many of the top players in golf, instructors, fitness trainers and nutritionists. I have garnered a wealth of information that many people just do not have access to," says Tredway.
Before moving to Dallas, he spent the 2002-03 season as an assistant coach for the University of Alabama’s women’s golf program. Tredway oversaw the Crimson Tide’s academic progress, as five players received All-SEC academic awards, including Darby Sligh, who was selected as the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Tredway competed on the Australian PGA Tour from 2000-02, where he qualified for the ANZ/Australasian PGA Tour in 2000 and 2001 and won the first stage of Qualifying School in Brisbane, Australia. He was named 2000 Rookie of the Year on the North Atlantic Tour, where he won four tournaments and holds five course records while competing as a professional. On the Nationwide Tour, Tredway recorded his best finish when he was 17th at the 2000 Oregon Classic, finishing with a four-round score of 282 (70-73-68-71). He finished in a tie for 19th (71-68-68-68= 275) in the 2006 Texas State Open.
As a collegian, he played at the University of Oregon from 1995-2000 where he helped the Ducks to a pair of NCAA Championship appearances and to a trio of NCAA Regional berths. Tredway led the first round of the 2000 Pac-10 Championship with an outstanding 65 and as a junior, he earned a spot on All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention Team after finishing eighth at the 1999 Pac-10 Conference Championship. He graduated from Oregon with a bachelor’s in anthropology in 2000.
As an amateur he was a medalist in the U.S. Amateur Championship and the U.S. Public Links Championship after reaching the Qualifying Round in 1998 and 1999, respectively. He also won the 1994 Oregon Junior Championship.
A native of Ashland, Ore., Tredway is married and resides in Warner Robins, Ga., with his wife Sarah.
