Andy Stabell has played an intricate role in promoting Mercer University athletics since joining the Sports Information department in August 2008.
Stabell began his career at Mercer as a graduate assistant, but quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to Assistant Sports Information Director after just one year.
Since then, he has served as the primary media relations contact for the University’s women’s volleyball, women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s golf programs. During that time, Stabell has also been the official statistician of the men’s basketball, baseball, lacrosse, and men’s and women’s soccer teams.
Stabell proved instrumental in helping Mercer successfully host the 2010 and 2011 Atlantic Sun Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships, as he served as the official in-game statistician while assisting with other media relations and game management duties.
His involvement in promoting both golf programs has been equally extensive. Since 2009, he has been the Media Relations Director of the Brickyard Collegiate Championship, one of the southeast region’s premier tournaments that annually attracts many of the nation’s top Division I men’s golf programs, including two-time defending NCAA national champion Augusta State University.
Stabell also assisted in the development and launching of Mercer’s new athletics site www.mercerbears.com during the summer of 2010 and has supported the University’s athletics marketing and fundraising efforts.
Prior to his arrival at Mercer three years ago, Stabell completed a year-long sports information internship at Division III Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts during his senior year as an undergraduate at Springfield College.
While at Elms, Stabell assisted in all administrative and game management duties for each of the College’s 15 intercollegiate sports. In addition, he helped produce Elms College’s athletics alumni newsletter “Blazon”, was the assistant meet director for all cross country and men’s golf home invitationals, researched athletic archive records, and concluded his internship by working as the official statistician of the three-day North Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship.
Stabell’s first step towards Division I began in March 2008 when he volunteered as a Media Relations Assistant for the 2008 NCAA Division II Elite Eight Men’s Basketball Championship hosted in Springfield, Massachusetts. During the four-day tournament, Stabell assisted in post-game press conferences and was the official backup in-game statistician for three games, including the national title game between Winona State and Augusta State.
Stabell completed his bachelor’s degree in Communications/Sports Journalism from Springfield College in May 2008 and recently earned his master’s degree from Mercer’s Tift College of Education in May 2011.
